Materials

1 x 50g ball Main colour 2ply Soft Spun yarn

1 x 50g ball Contrast colour 2ply Soft Spun yarn

Or

3 x 25g balls Main colour 2ply Jumper Yarn

3 x 25g balls Contrast colour 2 ply Jumper Yarn

If using 2ply Jumper yarn use 3 strands together throughout.

Needles: 5.50 mm   circular or a set of double pointed.

Gauge: 4 stitches = 1 inch

Abbreviations

K- Knit

P - Purl

M1 - Make one stitch. By picking up from row below or by making a backwards loop

K2tog - Decrease by knitting two stitches together

Ear flaps. Make 2.

Using 5.5 needles and main colour cast on 4 stitches.

Row 1 (wrong side) - Purl

Row 2 - K1, M1, knit to last stitch M1, K1.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 20 stitches.

Purl one row.

Knit one row.

Purl one row.

Hat

Using circular needle or 4 needles and first colour

Cast on 15 stitches for back, K 20 stitches from 1^st ear flap, cast on 28 stitches for front, K 20 stitches from 2^nd ear flap. (83 stitches). Join stitches in a round and mark beginning of round,

Row 1 Purl

Row 2 Knit

Repeat rows 1 and 2 twice more.

Knit 3 rows.

Join 2^nd colour and pattern 3 rows as chart. (1^st stitch first colour, 2^nd stitch second colour.)

Knit 3 rows

With second colour knit 3 rows.

Using 1^st colour pattern 3 rows as chart.

Using 2^nd colour knit 5 rows.

Crown

Row 1 - K3 *K2tog, K8*. Repeat from * to * all the way round.

Row 2 - Knit

Row 3 - K3 *K2tog, K7*. Repeat from * to * all the way round

Row 4 - Knit

Continue decreasing in this manner, reducing the K stitches each time, until 10 stitches are left.  Thread yarn through 10 stitches and pull tight and fasten off. Variations - add a long plait, tassel, loop, pom-pom, or at 10 stitches K2tog all round and continue to knit 5 rows on the stitches before fastening off.

Ties

Pick up 3 stitches from cast on row of ear flap and knit in garter stitch (every row knit) for 12 inches. Cast off. Variations - make plaits with or without tassels or pom-poms.
