Bold and colourful or traditionally smart? This jacket can be knitted either way.
Directions are given for two sizes. The figures in brackets refer to the larger size.If you choose to knit the plain version, simply ignore the chart instructions and change abbreviations as follows;
A - Black, B - White, M - Poppy Red
If you prefer a more muted colour, use Moss Green BSS32 for the background colour.

Yarn

2 ply soft spun

Tension:

17 stitches and 23 rows to 10 centimetres, measured over stocking stitch using 5mm needles.

Special abbreviations used

A - Dark Wheat
B - Mixed Wheat
C - Poppy Red
D - Black
M - Emerald Green

The poppies are worked in antarsia (blocks of contrast colour) using separate small balls of wool for each colour.
The main colour should be carried behind the contrast and woven in every other stitch.

Two colour rib (plain version)

1st row K1A, *K1A, P1B,rep from * to last 2 sts, K2a
2nd row P2A, *K1B, P1A, rep from * to last st, P1A

Moss Stitch

1st row *K1, P1, rep from * to end
2nd row *P1, K1, rep from * to end

Back

With 4.5mm needes and A, cast on 91 (111) sts and knit 1 row
**Next Row
Join in B, and keeping wool not in use to wrong side of work, K1A, *K1A, K1B, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2A
Starting with a 2nd row, work in 6cm in two-colour rib, ending after a 2nd row.
Break off A and B ***
Change to 5mm needles and M, starting with a K row, work 2 rows in st-st, decreasing 1 stitch at centre of 1st row - 90 (110) sts.
NB : Read odd-numbered (knit) rows from right to left and even-numbered rows (purl) from left to right.
Continue in st-st and work in pattern from chart, joining in C and D as required, place pattern as follows
1st Row - Starting with the 6th stitch, work the 40-st pattern, repeat to end after the 15th (35th) stitch.
Keeping pattern correct as now set, work from chart until row 12 has been completed.
Cast on 5 sts at start of next 2 rows for side vents - 100 (120) sts.
Continue working from chart until 4 (4.5) pattern repeats in all have been completed. Break off C and D, continue in M
Shape Shoulders - Cast off 15 sts at start of next 2 (4) rows and 10 sts at start of following 4 (2) rows - 30(40) sts.
Cast off.

Pocket Linings

With 5mm needles and M, cast on 17 (21) sts and work 14 rows in st-st.
Leave sts on a holder.

Left Front.

With 4.5mm needles and A, cast on 43 (53) sts and knit 1 row.
Work as for back from ** to ***
Change to 5mm needles and M, starting with a K row, work 2 rows in st-st.
Continue in st-st and work in pattern from chart, joining in C and D as required, place pattern as follows.
1st row -K2 (0) M, work the 40-st pattern repeat, to end after the 40th (12th) stitch, K1M.
Keeping pattern correct as now set, work from chart until row 12 has been completed.
Keeping pattern correct, cast on 5 sts for side vent, pattern across these sts, pattern 12 (15) sts, slip next 17 (21) sts on to a holder for pocket, K17 (21) sts of 1st pocket lining, pattern to end - 48 (58) sts.
Continue working from chart until 3 pattern repeats in all have been completed, then work rows 1 to 13 once more.

Shape Neck - wrong side -

Cast off 4 sts at start of next row - 44 (54) sts.
Keeping pattern correct, decrease 1 stitch at neck edge of next 6 (8) rows and following 3 (6) alternate rows - 35 (40) sts.
Work straight until left front matches back to shoulder, ending after a wrong-side row.
Breack off C and D.

Shape Shoulder

Cast off 15 sts at start of next row and following o (1) alternate row, then 10 sts at start of next 2 (1) alternate rows.

Right Front

Work as for left front placing pocket as follows:
Keeping pattern correct, pattern 14 (17) sts, slip next 17 (21) on to a holder for pocket, K17 (21) sts of 2nd pocket lining, pattern to end - 43 (53) sts.

Next row - wrong side

Cast on 5 sts for side vent, pattern to end - 48 (58) sts.
Complete to match left front, reversing shapings.

Sleeves

With 4.5mm needles and A, cast on 43 (53) sts and knit 1 row.
Work as for back from ** to ***.
Change to 5mm needles and M, starting with a K row, work 2 (4) rows in st-st, increasing 1 stitch at centre of 1st row - 44 (54) sts.
Continue in st-st and work in pattern from chart, joining in C and D as required, place pattern as follows:
1st row
K2(7)M, work the 40st pattern repeat, K2(7)M.
Continue in pattern as now set AND AT THE SAME TIME increase 1 stitch at each end of next row and every following 5th (4th) row until there are 82 (102) sts, taking extra sts into pattern.
Continue without further shaping until 3 pattern repeates have been completed, ending after a wrong-side row.
Break off C and D.
Work a further 0 (2) rows in st-st.
Cast off in M.

To Complete

Darn in ends. Lightly press all pieces, excluding ribbing.

Button Band

With 4.5mm needles, right side facing and A, pick up and knit 88 (96) sts along left front edge.
Work 4cm in moss stitch.
Cast off.

Buttonhole Band

Work to match button band, making buttonholes on 6th and 7th rows as follows:
6th row - right side
Pattern 3 sts, cast off 2 sts, *pattern 18 (20) sts, cast off 2 sts, rep from * 3 times more, pattern to end.
7th row - Pattern, casting on 2 sts over those cast off.

Pocket Tops

With 4.5mm needles, work across sts for pocket tops as follows:
*K1A, K1B, rep from * to last st, K1A.
1st Row - P1A, *K1B, P1A, rep from * to end.
2nd row - *K1A, P1B, rep from * to end.
Rep last 2 rows once more, then work the 1st row again.
Break off B, continue in A.
Knit 2 rows.
Cast off.
Join shoulder seams.

Collar

With 4.5mm needles, right side facing and A, pick up and knit 36 (42) sts from righ front neck, 29 (39) sts from back neck and 36 (42) sts from left front neck - 101 (123) sts.
Next row - P1A, *P1A, K1B, rep from * to last 2 sts, P2A
Starting with a 1st row, work 4cm in 2 colour rib, ending after a 2nd row.
Break off B, continue in A.
Collar Facing - Decreasing 8 (12) sts evenly on 1st row, work in a further 4 cm in st-st - 93 (111) sts.
Cast off loosley.

To Make Up

Place a marker about 24 (30) cm down from shoulders on back and fronts.
Fold sleeves in half lengthways and with fold to shoulder seam sew in sleeves between markers.
Join side seams to top of vent at cast on sts.

Vent Bands

With 4.5mm needles, right side facing and A, pick up and knit 24 sts from left side at back.
Work 3.5cm in moss-st.
Cast off in moss-st.
Work remaining vent bands to match.
With right sides facing, fold collar facing over collar ribbing. Sew centre front edges.
Turn collar right side out and catch down cast off edge of facing to inside of neck edge.
Sew down vent edges, pocket tops and linings.
Sew on buttons
