The Annual Shetland Flock Book Show

The Shetland Flock Book Trust was founded in 1926 as The Shetland Flock Book Society and is dedicated to preserving and promoting the breed of sheep native to the Shetland Islands.

Currently undergoing something of a revival, the Shetland Sheep are particularly noted for the ir fine quality and softness of their wool and for the excellent quality and flavour of their meat.
Additionally the breed exhibits other desireable qualities such as;
good mothering, milkiness, longevity and easy maintenace.

As a hill breed of sheep, it has a characteristic hardiness that enables it to thrive on the heather clad moors and rocky headlands of it's native islands.  It is also a versatile breed and does very well on improved pastures adding profligacy to it's other qualities.

Lamb from Shetland Sheep is now served in some of the finest restaurants in the UK and despite the relatively small size of the carcase is recognised to be of outstanding quality and flavour.

The majority of native Shetland Sheep are white but can come in a variety of colours including black, grey, brown and mixed.  The Ram has nicely rounded horns whilst the ewe is usually hornless. The head is well carried, the face of medium length, the tail is short, broad at the root and tapering to a point.

There have been sheep on Shetland for thousands of years and the Shetland belongs to the Northern Short Tailed group.  Geographical isolation has, almost certainly, prevented external influences on the breed.
